  • Whilst there are some similarities between yoga and Pilates, the main differences are in their purpose and philosophies.

Yoga, derived from the Sanskrit word "Yuj" meaning "to unite" or "to yoke", aims to create union between body, mind and spirit. Whilst yoga in the West primarily focuses on the physical movement practice (asana), the full practice includes guidelines on ethics, behaviours, breathwork, meditation and more. It is believed that these practices will lead to a connection to a higher consciousness.

Pilates, on the other hand, was created by Joseph Pilates, a German prisoner of war, who trained casualties and started to notice the connection between weak areas of the body and overcompensation of others. He created the Pilates system to address bodily imbalances, improve alignment and posture, and build deep core strength.

Both practices harness the breath to aid movement and build stamina, strength and flexibility.
